Return to Brotherly Love

5 and I took a quick trip down to Philly.  It was a sweltering 90 degrees or so and we walked for miles and miles. And then some more miles.

It's been several years since my last time in Philly, but not too much has changed and it was nice to see familiar places.  There are very few cities that I feel I am fairly familiar with (NYC, St. Paul...), and Philly is one of them.

The Wannamaker Organ in Macy's.
Estimated to be worth $73M.

Meh. I was expecting something more like Jax.

Daytripping: Atlantic City

There was an online deal to go to Atlantic City for the day.  For a mere $5, you got a round trip luxury bus ride to and from AC (snacks and bottled water included!), a $10 casino meal voucher, and a $5 slots card.  Not bad, I say.

The downside was the 1+ hour wait for the bus to arrive.  As well as the rescheduled return buses. We didn't get home until well after midnight. And it was a Tuesday.

It was a much chillier time than when I went 2 summers ago, but it was nice seeing the boardwalk a little emptier.  The casino buffet left something to be desired, but for $9, I couldn't really complain (free refills on soda!!!).  And although we did start winning money on the slots, it took a turn for the worse and I think we lost about $14 total.  I've wasted that much on a bad movie.

mini-Roadtrip 2011 | Day 4: Ithaca, Still Gorges!

We crossed back stateside after a stop at Candian Duty Free.  We spent our last night in Ithaca and we did all the things you are supposed to do in Ithaca:

Gorge!

Suicide Bridge

Brownie Sundae at Purity Ice Cream

Sweet, sweet brownie sundae.  Ithaca claims to be the birthplace of ice cream sundaes.

Banana Split at Purity Ice Cream

We also walked the plaza in town and ate at Moosewood Restaurant.  Not because Moosewood was that good the last time I was there, but it is THE place to eat in Ithaca.  The food wasn't bad this time around, but it was not amazing either.

mini-Roadtrip 2011 | Day 3: Niagara Falls!!!

We crossed the border and headed into Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Everyone always says the Canada side is nicer and after crossing back into the U.S. side the next day, I'd say they weren't lying.

Unfortunately, there was still too much ice in the water so the Maid of the Mist boats were not running. It was a disappointment, but in the end it was probably for the best. We paid to go down on the observation deck right by Horseshoe (Canadian) Falls, and it was damn cold down there! Almost painfully windy and wet. Our cheap garbage bag ponchos did not help so much. But the falls are beautiful regardless.

U.S. falls. Much sunnier the next day

Niagara Falls, ON, was a tourist trap in itself, but in a fun cheesy way.  We took full advantage of being tourists and got some fun pass that got us admission to the ferris wheel, alien mini-golf, some ghost blaster black-light laser game, a horrible motion simulator ride, a celebrity wax museum, as well as tokens for the Midway.  It was great!  We got a nice view of the falls at night and won a few new friendsies at the Midway.  I was really hoping 5 would win me a giant stuffed pegasus like I've always wanted since childhood, but unless we spent all of our life savings on tokens (to win tickets), it was not going to happen.  Also, giant stuffed pegasuses were not available as a prize.

mini-Roadtrip 2011 | Day 2: Buffalo Wings Central

After cruising across much of NY State, we hightailed it over to Buffalo, NY.  On the itinerary was Anchor Bar, purported home of the original buffalo wings.  Yes, buffalo wings are actually from Buffalo.  No, there are no buffalo in Buffalo.

The wings were definitely tasty (as were the seasoned potato wedges), but they did not change my life.

mini-Roadtrip 2011 | Day 1: Corning, NY

We took a little roadtrip across the glorious Empire State, stopping in Corning, NY to visit the Corning Museum of Glass. (Yes, Corning, like Corningware products and such.)

I went to the CMOG many, many years ago and I remember being super impressed by it.  I'm happy to say, years later, the place still impressed.

CMOG is the world's largest museum of glass, with a collection spanning over 35 centuries of glass. That is a lot of glass. There was bad art glass, interactive modules and various demos including Glass Breaking and Hot Glassmaking.  There was even a periscope looking out onto the town of Corning.

I see you!

A Visit to the Islands. The US Virgin Islands.

Hawksnest Bay, St. John.

After a long NYC winter of snow (and more snow) and freezing temperatures, I went with SMMT to the U.S. Virgin Islands for a week of island relaxation  We rented a condo on St. John and visited a new beach each morning.  We had our favorites, but they were all beautiful.  We didn't actually do too much: eating, sleeping, laying on the beach, going into the ocean, reading on the balcony, going to the pool.  Not a bad life.

OMG, DONK!

On the ferry to St. Thomas.  Thank you, Dramamine.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.  The walls of the buildings were built from Danish and Dutch ship ballasts that came over in the 16th century.
